Rome Is Burning
video
projection
2014
I filmed this in a cave in rural Pennsylvania. It was during a difficult period where my three surviving grandparents died with a year and a half. I became depressed and started studying things having to do with caves, how they were used for safety, how they patiently formed and reformed themselves with mineral deposits, how the acoustics and temperature varied drastically from the space directly outside of them. Wearing my blue grandmother's dress, I decided to walk through the cave while playing a blue violin. The title is called Rome is Burning after the legend of Nero playing the fiddle while Rome burned around him as a last ditch effort to find solace.
